Cotton candy everywhere!! He looked around and as far as his eyes could see was cotton candy. pink puffy trees, purple pillowie foliage, and a sweet billowing baby blue road. It had been awhile since he had seen this much cotton candy. He bent down and grabbed a big handful of the blue road with his had. As he stood up he drew the candy toward his mouth. Just as he was about to enjoy the soft sweet fibers he saw from the corner of his eye, a small squirrel. This was not just an ordinary squirrel for no ordinary squirrel would have distracted him from his tasty prize. No, this squirrel was a dancing squirrel. He thought the squirrel odd. Odd on two accounts the first of which is that squirrels don't dance (at least not in his current part of the country) and secondly because the squirrel's dance was not all that great. All the dancing squirrels he had ever met were extraordinarily good dancers, but this one lacked rhythm, poise, and creativity. The squirrel just jerked violently back and forth with its hands around its neck. That's it. No twirls, jumps or runs (which dancing squirrels are famous for). Just forward and backward, front and back. Then with one spin it's arms raised in the air it fell over on its back.
Dropping his cotton candy he ran over to the squirrel. It had stopped moving and didn't seem to be breathing. He picked the little squirrel up in his hands. A tuft of pink puffy tree was in its mouth. Why hadn't the cotton candy dissolved? He removed the candy and the un-dancing squirrel began to breath again. A few minutes passed as he waited for it to revive. When the squirrel came to He asked it what had happened. The squirrel looked up at him as it rubbed its eyes as if to bring the world into focus. It's mouth dropped and it ran terrified out and away from him like any self respecting squirrel would do when awaking in someones hands.
He wondered why he had asked the squirrel a question as he continued his trek down the road. Of course avoiding the 'pink stuff' that only looks like cotton candy...
This is funny! I like the irony with the dancing squirrel that's not really dancing and the cotton candy that's not really cotton candy.
ReplyDeleteJ you're so silly
ReplyDeleteThis was fantastically whimsical (with an edge- almost Burton-esque). It makes me want to write short stories again.
